Artist's Comments

Prince Doran Martell, regent of Dorne and father of the princess Arianne Martell. Doran suffers from gout, so he is presented to us like someone who is in pain constantly, and is hardly able to walk. Therefore, he is always sitting, with a blanket on his knees and enjoying the peacefulness of the gardens.

He reminds me somehow of Marcus Aurelius, my favorite Roman Emperor. Given his taste for peace and the simple, beautiful things of life, he could have written the famous Meditations. Too bad that his own country is claiming for blood and revenge instead of peace and meditation. How will Doran cope with convulse times?


Uuh..In contrast to Asha, I really like how this turned out. The background is crappy, but I thought it would be better to do something instead of leaving it blank.

Doran Martell is a character from the A Song Of Ice and Fire by George R. R. Martin.

He is like Aurelius isn't he? i think he is the biggest badass in these books. i just the big revel at the end of book four. if anyone should rule the seven kingdoms it is this man.

Agreed. Doran would be a very good ruler. I was shocked too when I learnt he had been conspiring and scheming to bring back the Targaryens. Poor old man with gout? Not Doran.

But I'm digging Stannis for the throne. He'll never get to rule, we all know that, but if I were to fight for one of the aspirants to the throne, I'd be going for him.

i just don't think any of the people who are pinning for the throne are going to get it. mark me on this it is going to be someone who doesn't want to be king and will do a wonderful job at it.

You're absolutely right. I searched for Doran Martell here in DA and I was shocked to learn my pic was the only one! That's not fair, poor Doran. He's a very interesting character. Now I'm in sort of a Martell frenzy, so I think I'll be doing all of them.
