Dornish Siblings by InTheArmsOfUndertow Dornish Siblings by InTheArmsOfUndertow
The Dornish siblings in their youth/late adolescence.

From left to right: prince Oberyn Martell, aka The Red Viper, prince Doran Martell, and princess Elia Martell.

Princess Elia is sick. This is why she looks less healthy than the other two. I've given Doran a Tribune's toga because he deserves it, he's a mastermind and I cannot wait to see what's he up to.

Red is my favorite color, just in case you hadn't noticed :P

Doran, Oberyn and Elia Martell are characters from the saga A song of Ice and Fire by George R.R Martin.

Wait. ARE the Martells--and the Dornish in general--described as Roman and/or Mediterranean? Gosh, I did them a severe disservice by skimming AFFC, then. I'm rereading the series along with the TV show now, but it'll be a long while until I get back to the end of it. I suddenly want to read about the Martells.

Doing a quick google search, it does seem that GRRM describes the Martells and the "Salty Dornish" (that is, the ones who've kept most of their Rhoynar blood) as having dark hair and olive skin, which is the hallmark of the Mediterranean look. Amok's official art of Oberyn and what's-her-name Sand certainly looks Mediterranean.

Was there anything in the books that struck you as specifically Roman, though? I'd always thought Valyria was the ancient Rome analog, hence why they're my favorite house. But then the Martells were the only non-Valyrians that the Targaryens were willing to marry, so that does say something about them! They certainly LOOK more Roman than the Targaryens, at least physically.

They are not specifically described as Mediterranean, but the description of their appearance, as well as their described costumes, made me think they might be a generic rendition of the mediterranean cultures. I am Spanish, and I always thought Dorne sort of resembled Spain, since it seems to present a mix of Moorish, Phoenician and Roman traits (and if we have something, it's oranges, haha). And if we consider the Tyrells French, that would also fit Spain and France's lifelong rivalry.
However, ASOIAF is fantasy, and I don't think Martin had just one country in mind when designing Westeros. For example, he said Spain's Gibraltar was the main inspiration for Casterly Rock, so who knows! Dorne might Byzantium; we can't be sure. But it's always fun to try to fit it into a real country ;)

Maravilloso!

Great work! Actually I've never imagine Dornish people like Roman, but I like this idea (I always saw them as Arabs for some reason). Your Doran looks like Caesar from Rome series :D
And I love your Elia, she look sad and sick. I wonder what she was like...

Well, they could perfectly be Arabs too! It's just that for some reason, the description of food, as well as their traditions and the personality of the Dornish women, so outspoken, made me think of them as more mediterranean. Maybe they could be a mix between Rome and the moorish, who knows!

Yes, I got inspired in HBO's Rome's Caesar for Doran, I just love the series!^^

I'd say they have a lot of Ancient Persia elements, more than Arab elements. (Nope, I'm not saying this because my ancestors are Persians and the Dornish are so awesome, nosirree.)

Ha, I thought you might've used that actor as inspiration for Doran. It's really fitting.

Yeah, they are more Persian than Arab for sure. Atleast, definitely Mediterranean. It seems that nobody remembers that the Persian Empire was one of the most powerful ever, but I do! And I think the Dornish have some Persian heritage for sure.

I think they're really supposed to be generically Mediterranean. Their culture has elements from the Middle East, Spain, Greece, Sicily, etc...

I'm starting to really dig how Dorne turns into some awesome version of Rome under your pen and pencil. I would only change the composition so that it doesn't look like Oberyn and Doran posing for a picture, and Elia waks in the side and is like " Oh hey guys what's going on?"

And you and ~Sir-Heartsalot are responsible for this: [link]
Congratulations.

Haha you caught me. Elia was totally thrown in the picture so I didn't have "that blank space there". Sometimes I'm possessed by Horror Vacuii, and then this things happen.

omh... I can't stop laughing at :iconsir-heartsalot: 's "dragon herpes" comment! so funny! I haven't met these guys yet cause I'm only on the 2nd book. I've got like 50 pages left, and then I've got the next 2 books on order. Hopefully they'll get here soon so I can start reading! These guys look really amazing though! They actually look a lot like a Roman family.

Yeah, I picture the Martells like a Roman family ^^. Or, maybe eastern Roman, like more byzantine. I think you will like them very much. You get a glimpse of their awesomeness in Storm of Swords, but Feast for Crows is definitely their consacration. Geeze, I'm glad that I didn't make any spoilers here! I would have hated to spoil the fun for you!

I just finished Clash of Kings and I'm waiting for Storm of Swords and Feat of Crows in the mail. Darnit! I wished they'd get here already! I didn't want to pay the extra $5 for the express shipping. In retrospect, I'm beginning to think that extra $5 would've been well worth it!

Doran looks scheming indeed, more than Oberyn as :iconsir-heartsalot: said. And this is a splendid portrait of Elia, she looks sick but still beautiful.

[link] is always right! Oberyn may be dangerous, but atleast you always know what he's up to. You can't say that about Doran. Poor, old gouty man? Ha! Beware. He could be the one marrying Dany in the end.

Me too. Judging by what we know in canon, it seems like they were a love match. I wish she hadn't left him!

OMG! You should draw the 2 of them! Mellario is short & I think she's supposed to look like Arianne.

Ooh! I love it! I think this may be the 1st pic I've ever seen of the 3 of them together. I love how made Elia look sickly, that's a nice touch. & I like her little headpiece w/ the sun pendant.

One little thing, though- Doran should have long hair. It's indicated that the Dornish wear their hair long.

Ugh yes, I know. Doran should have had long hair. But for some reason, everytime I picture him, I see him with a really short Roman-style haircut. I think it suits him better. Oberyn definitely wins at the hot-with-long-hair competition. Doran is just another different league.
